Barrage

Barrage is the classic French qualification format: teams play in poules of four, and after two rounds the teams standing at one win each play a decider — the barrage — for the last qualifying spot. Two wins qualify directly.

How it works

  1. Poule of 4: round 1 pairs teams randomly; round 2 pairs the winners together and the losers together.

  2. The 2-win team qualifies directly; the 0–2 team is out.

  3. The two 1–1 teams play the barrage match for the second qualifying place.

  4. Qualifiers advance to a knockout main draw (often with a consolante for the rest).

Why choose it

  • Everyone is guaranteed at least two matches.
  • Two qualification paths keep hope alive after a first-round loss.
  • The traditional format of French and international championships.
